Wallpaper Stripping

This is what I am taking off! I have always loved this paper pattern but have grown tired of it after almost 9 years. It has been quite a tedious job, to say the least! But I am coming down the homestretch now! Below, you can see what little is left to remove yet. Just this partial strip, plus a small piece over the mirror. I have been dreading it all day today, as I have to take the light fixture down next.

Thank goodness, I applied sizing to the walls before the wallpaper hanger hung the paper! Thus, the paper is coming off without any damage to the walls. It's the backing that takes the time. I score it lightly with one of those little scoring tools, and then soak it by spraying it with hot water with fabric softener in it. I just keep soaking it over and over, and then allow it to stand 15-20 minutes, and scrape it off! It's a messy job, no doubt about it! Some of it is actually peeling off so nicely. But then comes the sticky mess....skimming off the softened glue and washing the walls down! This wallpaper was not the pre-pasted kind, so the adhesive is quite sticky!!! And it is also 28" wide! But I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now!

Below, you can see the wallpaper backing that is taking so much time to remove!

I went to Home Depot last night and had my paint mixed up...so now I am just hoping I am going to be pleased with the color! After the painting is done, then comes the vinyl removal from the floor, and then I will lay ceramic tile. I had the commode lifted last Thursday, and so I am moving right along! I am putting all new baseboard down after the ceramic is finished. I figure another 2 weeks, and I'll be finished! I work at my own pace, and I don't rush with anything, anymore! I plan to do my bathroom and dressing area after this. I have to keep busy at night...Believe it or not, I can unwind and relax this way! Plus, every time I open the bathroom door to leave the room, there are all my little 'fur kids' laying in the hallway outside the door waiting for me! What a great reward, wouldn't you agree? LOL I'll be around to visit you all soon!
Below is another darling button from Pea that she was passing on to all her readers! It's a cutie with that little leprachaun perched on top! Thank you, Pea!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!!

It is relaxing to do that type of thing, especially at our own pace.
Gives us a nice feeling of accomplishment when all is done.
My bed is full of fur babies, lol. They look so comfy, it's both dogs and they take up all the bed.

Wow, what a big job, Nancy! But as others have said, it will be well worth it, in the end. Now when you're finished, I have a couple of jobs around here that need to be done. :-)

Have a great rest of the week!

Hugs,

Renie

That just looks like way too much work. Apparently when that wall paper was put up, they put it to stay. Did you think about painting over the paper if it was on tightly?

Oh Nancy,

What a job. We have lots of home improvement projects pending, but Jim's hand (his left this time) is not doing well at all. We are anticipating a second surgery. Please pray for him.

Take care, friend.

You've got so much energy! I hate doing house stuff these days.

Have to say I stopped wallpapering years ago because it was such a job taking it off. I'm so lazy all my walls are just painted but I do like them plain.

Hope you let us see your new colour.

I have never wallpapered, the reason, I am married to a painter, so everything gets painted at my home. But, it looks like most of the difficult work is behind you and I'm sure the paint will look lovely.

Take care of yourself and don't work to hard. Have a nice week-end.

Oh, I did this to our hall bathroom and master bath a few years ago, and it IS a tedious job, but so worth it when you're done and have a 'new look'

Nancy,

When you have the backing off, put a bit of apple cider vinegar in your squirt bottle with some warm water. It will cut through the glue and make your job so much easier. Love the wallpaper, but after 9 years I can understand why you want a change.

I also enjoy redecorating, but can't do much of it anymore because of my arthritic knees. Just standing on a ladder kills me. We're getting older. I'm glad you are taking your time.

Have a great weekend, my friend.
Blessings,
Mary

Hi Nancy!

WOW! What a job! I've never liked stripping wallpaper, so for the most part Wes does it. I'm usually the clean up girl! We've gotten rid of most of our wallpaper since our house is on the market. People don't want any wallpaper when purchasing a house! They want it move in ready!!

I'm anxious to see what color you're painting your bathroom! Please show us finished photos!! I LOVE room redos.

Have a good week sweetie!

Hugs, Sherry

WOW! What a job Nancy! You have much more energy then I do!! lol! How did you learn how to do all the things like putting in ceramic tile and all? I really think you should come to Maine and teach me! The kitchen remodel is still in it's beginning stages. I'll post some pictures in my next post. They put the subfloor down yesterday and will start the tile today. My house is one big mess with kitchen stuff everywhere. It makes me very weary having so much stuff piled everywhere but I too know it will be worth it when it's done. I keep telling myself that!

Dear Nancy ~~ I am sure your bathroom looks wonderful now, and do you intend to do your other bathroom straight away or do you plan to have a break before you do the one?
I am feeling quite a bit better today, and Kerry was here yesterday for home care duties. So we were both very lucky. Take great care and don't work too hard. Love, Merle.

I know it's going to be beautiful when you're finished. I've never wallpapered. It's too easy to paint and you can change often! LOL You did such a great job on your foyer tile, the other tiling projects will be too!

Hi Nancy
I feel for you. We stripped the wallpaper from the master bath and the guest bedroom. The bathroom was simple. It had been there for so long that the steam from the shower had loosened it over a period of time. Some of it was hanging down. All we had to do was grab hold and pull it off. The bedroom was another story. The bonehead cop that lived here before we moved in had painted the wallpaper, making it extremely difficult to remove One wall actually had another layer of wallpaper under the painted. It was raccoon paper! I was only able to save a small chunk of it. I still don't know what in the world I'm going to do with it! lol
Take care
Lisa

What a huge job, Nancy! I'm impressed with your skills! And I completely agree that a bunch of kitties waiting outside the door is a wonderful thing indeed!

Hello dear Nancy:-)

Finally getting caught up with you! Remind me not to go away and get so far behind visiting everyone! lol I remember well what a job it was to remove wallpaper...in fact, after we had it all off, we never did put up wallpaper again in the house!!! I did put a border in my computer/faerie room but that's it. There's so many nice paint colours out there and so many textures you can do, one doesn't need the wallpaper anymore. I'm very impressed that you do everything yourself, even the tiles...you're a gal after my own heart:-)

In answer to your question, yes the gray fluffy kitty IS a female! I checked! lol She loves to lay on her back and have me scratching all her tummy so it was very easy to check. It really breaks my heart that I can't keep all 3 of them but E is really giving me a hard time about the whole situation. Next week I will get the cage out of the shed and get all three in there to bring them to Pet Save. At least there I know they won't be put down. I'll miss them so much after all these months of feeding them and teaching them to trust me...now I'll have to do this and it breaks my heart. Maybe I can get Pet Save to take E instead and I'll keep the kitties??? LOL Love ya! xoxo

So, how did your home impovement project turn out? Hope you are happy with it since you have invested so much time and elbow grease into it. Bet it looks great. Sorry it's been so long since I've been around to check in but I've been in and out of the private reserved room I have at the hospital twice since Thanksgiving. Actually I dont but should have a reserved room considering how much I use it.
Anyway, good to see you are getting along well.

Just checking in to see if you have a new post up. Read about the tom that you are trying to catch. Hope you have him by now. What do you suppose happened to his poor little foot? That makes me so sad!
Barney is growing leaps and bounds. So wish I could get up to him but can't yet. Hopefully this summer when the horses are back and we are down there all the time he will get used to us. I want him in the house next winter!

Noodles was naughty last night and wouldn't come in at bedtime. Hubby searched the neighborhood twice and I was out once. Finally we gave up and went to bed and left the garage door up so that he could come in when he was tired of roaming around. Now he is asleep on our bed all worn out from being up so late!

It's like raising kids again! lol!

Hey, how's the redecorating going? We have tons of projects waiting for us at home, but Jim's hand is not doing well. I think they will wait another season. Oh well.

Hope you are doing okay.
